about

In the seven years since the release of their debut LP, THE CROWN (2016), MIDNIGHTCHOIR frontman Patrick Bobilin ran for statewide office, was arrested repeatedly in 2020 protests, and founded a Manhattan mutual aid organization. Bobilin’s love for 80s goth rock and pounding electronic beats combined with his political experiences color the tone and tenor of the 10 songs on the album. The combinations of sex, politics, and gothic imagery explain the record's lyrical content and the inclusion of three covers.

As Bobilin wrote about the new record:

"After years away from music and venturing into politics, Loverboy Molotov brings together my aesthetic and intellectual influences to turn my frustrations with the political landscape into something hopeful. In this wild era of disaster, upheaval, and disinformation, maybe communing socially, sexually, or via protest is the only thing left to have hope in. My goal was to have something to dance to, to march to, and to mend a heartbreak to all in one place. We've had a great time performing these songs so far and can't wait to do more."

Preceded with a threesome of singles ("Molotov," "Lovecrimes," and "Into The Abyss") in addition to the previously mentioned collection of B-side covers (Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead," INXS' "Need You Tonight" ft. guitar from David Simutis of Err0r C0de, and Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus"), Loverboy Molotov is further celebrated today with a focus track entitled "Rising Tide," a track inspired by the increase in oppressive policies and anti-LGBTQ legislation, not unlike previous waves of fascism.

Continuing on the record's focus track, Bobilin wrote:

"Transparently, this song is about the rising tide of fascism that aims to strip away the rights of our trans and queer family. It also ends the album on a hopeful note after opening with a worry we need to run for our lives. We're not going anywhere, we're going to fight, and we're going to rewrite the story if we need to."
